Nerdiest Band... Ever

I consider myself quite the musicologist - I troll the web for hidden gems and bizarre obscurities on a daily basis. So, I come with some credentials and expertise when I say I have found the nerdiest band of all time. That band is the Stellar Unit.

These guys are too nerdy for Radio Shack, and the guy on the right looks to be that "wacky" type nerd (i.e. the Gallagher variety) - the worst kind. The only thing distracting me from his frozen smile and bug eyes (which continue to haunt my dreams) is the enormous Adam's apple of the guy on the left.

If that horrifying image doesn't convince you, maybe a taste of their music will. Here's their rendition of "Zip-a-dee Doo-dah" which scores a perfect ten on the nerd scale.

I thank Bizarre Records for this one - a site so good, I actually bought their book.

Who are the runners up, you ask? Frankly, you don't have to think too hard to come up with some ultra-nerdy musicians. Here's a few better known musical acts that follow in the footsteps of the Stellar Unit:

Christopher Cross
England Dan & John Ford Coley
Devo
They Might Be Giants
Talking Heads
Kraftwerk
Buckner & Garcia
Weird Al Yankovic

Feel free to chime in with any others that you can think of. But before you go, let me leave you with a couple more heirs of the Stellar Unit from the bins of bad album covers at Bizarre Records:

Damn! I've got some pretty awful pictures of me and my brother from the 1970s that would rival this one - only my parents didn't plaster any of them on album covers! I hope these poor girls sued their parents then used the money to start a new life overseas.

This one's so bad it was hard for me to accept that it was real. Once I was able to come to terms with the reality of Country Church, my next hurdle was getting past those snug fitting sweater vests. The horror!

I sent an email to your gmail account, this one:

    231nurre@gmail.com

The name is changed around to keep it private. I am sure you will know the account. It is some info on uploading MP3s, embedding them and downloading in Blogger. There are two mails. The 1st one is bleaker but I did not give up.

One things that has changed is I can now see your Quicktaime player after updating my Quicktime. Before I could not.

Let me know what you think of my info... thanks.

  2. Hey Gil. Wow! I had never heard of any of these. I can understand why now. lol I thought music of today was mostly bad, but these artists of the past make me wanna gauge my eyes out. I can only imagine what the music was like.

  4. Thanks for turning me onto The Stellar Unit, Gilligan. I thought I'd seen it all when it came to goofy LP covers (i.e: Country Church is an old fave), but I'd never seen this one.

Another nerd band I have unreasonable affection for is 'The King's Singers' - their 'Swingle Singers' style vocal treatments of classic pop hits score high on the old nerd-o-meter!
