The Dardos Award

I recently received the Dardos Award from Keith over at Sugar & Spice. Keith runs another cool site called Dino's Lounge where Dean Martin's mojo and the Keith's enthusiasm combine to make for a contagiously entertaining blog. I check in on a daily basis and walk away wishing I was more like Dino every time.

Anyway, The Dardos Award is described as: An award given for recognition of cultural, ethical, literary, and personal values transmitted in the form of creative and original writing. These stamps were created with the intention of promoting fraternization between bloggers, a way of showing affection and gratitude for work that adds value to the Web.

I am tasked now with picking five of my favorite bloggers to give the award to while following these rules:

1) Accept the award by posting it on your blog along with the name of the person that has granted the award and a link to his/her blog.

2) Pass the award to another five blogs that are worthy of this acknowledgement, remembering to contact each of them to let them know they have been selected for this award.

So here's the 5 faves. (I've tried not to select anyone who's already received the award - if you have, I guess just add another trophy to the mantle.)

1. Exquisitely Bored in Nacogdoches
Chris's blog is one of the first ones I started following and, many months later, I'm still returning. The pillars of his site are the incredible photographs of old buildings and other architectural artifacts. Intermixed are wonderful bits of pop culture history from Sinatra to Journey, from classic movies to Saturday morning TV. Always classy and well written - kudos to Chris for maintaining the quality for almost four years!

2. I'm Learning to Share
I like to think that this is what Retrospace would be if I did research, fact checked, and put love and time into each post. Full of tons of eye candy and interesting information, I always check in when The In-Crowd puts up a new post.

3. The Gentlebear
About once a week there appears a post on a recording that is brimming with interesting facts, great images, and accompanying sound clips. I always learn something new and can really appreciate the level of knowledge, love of the music, and care that goes into each post. I just wish he'd become obsessed like me and post every day.

4. Adventures in Nerdliness
Darius Whiteplume has one helluva nerdy thing going on... and I'm diggin it. Featuring posts on Hotties of Yore, Dungeons & Dragons, hilarious rants, and Nerd Girls of Note - how can you go wrong? Whiteplume's humor and unique perspective is always a welcome guest in my 8 to 5 office cubicle hell.

5. No Smoking in the Skull Cave
Becca's site should be the template for all bloggers to follow who want to tap into the pop culture landscape - it's witty, funny, and often surprises you with its originality. She's a damn fine artist in her own right, and has already won piles of awards... add this one to the list!

I could easily keep going - I've got a whole sidebar of great blogs I follow on a regular basis, but I have to limit it to 5. Them's the rules. Cheers!

***Update***
I did a little research, just out of simple curiosity, to see the origins of this award. I think it basically translates to "The Dart Awards" and it is amazing how widespread it is. Its origin is a mystery- I challenge anyone to find exactly where it started. It is known by at least three different names and its rules vary from blog-to-blog. It exists in both English and Spanish speaking blogging communities. I know it's been traveling around from blog to blog for at least the past year. Intriguing.

  1. Thank you!

I had no idea mine was one of the first blogs you perused. I'd have tried a lot harder had I known that! And I'd have to say, you've taken my approach to it (if in fact you did), and taken it stratospherically far, far away from that origin. Becca as well.

  2. Hey Gil. Great post. It was neat to see the blogs that you gave this award to. Thanks for the cool mention about my blogging. I do my best. I'm very glad that I gave this award to you. Your blog definitely deserves it. I've learned so much more about things I remember from the past and things I never even knew about. Cheers!

  5. Chris - I think I lurked around a while before I took the plunge and started commenting and making a blog of my own. Ahh, the good ol' days of creepy anonymity.

Keith- Like I've said before: we're not getting paid for this s@#t, so we need all the positive reinforcement we can get.

DM Peters- I need to check it out. Definitely no one ever as cool as Dino, except maybe Ryan Seacrest.... just kidding.

RetroHound - You could basically blog your life away reading all this cool stuff. To hell with politics and world events - let's look at the new post on Mork & Mindy stickers!

  7. You are far too kind, my friend.

I used to think blogging was stupid, but that was before I realized it was not just all news, politics, and white supremacy :-) It certainly helps the work day go by!
