Retro-Quote #3: Match Game PM

"Let's see if we can get Rock Hudson out of Fanny"- Gene Rayburn

The question on Match Game PM was "Telly Savalas said, 'I hate to tell you, but I put on a wig and now I look like BLANK'".
The contestant's answer was "Rock Hudson", but none of the celebrity panel's answers were matching. Brett wrote "Paul Newman", Charles Nelson Reilly scribbled "hell", and Richard Dawson's answer was "Cher". Now it was all up to the last celebrity, Fanny Flagg. And thus came the infamous words from Gene Rayburn. Truly one of the great moments in TV history.

No one gave an indication they caught Gene's accidental double entendre. Although, I'd bet money Charles Nelson Reilly, dressed in a snazzy silk scarf, knew of Hudson's secret life and was holding back a sly chuckle.

  1. I always wondered who in Hollywood knew the truth about Rock Hudson and who didn't.

  2. Honestly, I just presumed everyone knew about Hudson. I know I was in Junior High back in the early seventies when I heard it even! Strangely enough, I never even suspected Paul Lynde was gay but that's another story!

  3. I was pretty clueless in these matters as a kid - I didn't even know the Village People were gay. The idea that folks like Ms. Hathaway (Nancy Kulp), Charles Nelson Reilly and Paul Lynde could be gay was WAY beyond me.

  4. I never saw Reilly or Lynde as gay, just wonderfully eccentric and hilarious to watch. Once in a while, Dawson would do a Lynde impression and it was spot-on.

Speaking of Match Game, where's the tell-all book about this show? I'm sure it would make an amazing read. With Rayburn, Reilly, and Sommers all gone, I'm afraid some great stories may have gone with them. Quick, somebody get Dawson, Flagg, and Betty White to spill all!

  5. I loved that show, and Gene's mic sweet too!

  6. Now that's a book I'd like to read. Although, I'm sure it would pale in comparison to the Gong Show backstage antics.

Gene's mic was something to behold. "Long" doesn't quite encompass the yardage of that massive microphone.

  7. Now I have the Match Game theme running through my head... actually, it's not such a bad thing!

I remember watching a Paul Lynde sitcom where he was a married father and only thought it would be fun to be his kid! Oy!

CNR was rather moody on Match Game. There were some shows where he was such a pompous ass. Still, he and Brett Somers were the best on that show.

  8. Ummm...at the risk of turning this into a "Who is and who isn't" discussion, you guys DO know that Fanny Flagg is herself gay?

  9. No I did not, but I guess I should have considering Fried Green Tomatoes.
