Retro Quote #5: Gilligan Is Waaayyy Out of Touch

“I don't want to read about some of these actresses who are around today. They sound like my niece in Scarsdale. I love my niece in Scarsdale, but I won't buy tickets to see her act.”- Vincent Price
As I look at this month's People magazine, it becomes abundantly clear that I am, for all practical purposes, completely out of touch with the current who's-who in the celebrity world. I don't watch any reality shows, so I don't know anyone from American Idol or Dancing with the Stars. I don't watch any current dramas like House or Grey's Anatomy or CSI or whatever's popular these days. And I don't listen to any popular music either - so names like Rihanna are just meaningless.

When did this happen? I wasn't always in the dark. In fact, I was once quite "in the know". It seems like overnight I turn around and I don't recognize a single face in People magazine. Until my wife corrected me last week, I thought Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston were still married. Evidently, he's married to Angelina Jolie who I remember as being with Billy Bob Thornton.... whatever. (sigh)

Needless to say, don't come to Retrospace to find the latest celebrity gossip.

  1. Yeah, my wife keeps me updated, too. I only poke my head up when it's from some past celebrity. These newbies mean nada to me.

  3. Ditto, here.
I don't watch T.V., listen to the radio, or read the paper.

I refer to myself as "The Perfect Juror."
    O.J.'s people woulda loved me...

  4. My wife is even more out of touch than I am. But that's only because she really really doesn't care, while I just really don't care. Recently I saw an ad for the grammys or golden globes or something where they breathlessly announced who was going to be performing and I knew only one band/singer that they announced. There's been a bunch of news on my little yahoo thing about some reality show couple that I had never heard of and still don't know what show they are on or what the big deal about them was. What I want to know is, why do they keep showing up on a news headline thing? Do that many people really care?

  5. I'm pretty much out of the current stuff these days, too, but I wouldn't miss out on House for almost anything! It's easily my favorite show on TV these days (such a long wait between seasons, tho...).

But I do know how you feel... in the checkout line at the grocery store, I glance at the celeb and tabloid stuff and wonder "who the heck ARE these people, anyway?"

  6. Can't say I've ever seen House (and probably never will). I will say Netflix streaming has changed the Gilligan household viewing big time. It's been very nice to just click on any episode of Family Ties, Buck Rogers, Adam 12, The Munsters, The Avengers, Gimme a Break, The Hardy Boys, The Night Stalker, Kojak, McMillan & Wife, etc., etc..

  7. You mean to tell me that Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston are no longer married? When did this happen? Next thing you know, Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson will be callin' it quits!

  8. You mean Tommy Lee and Pam Anderson are an item? When did this happen? ;-)

  9. Right on brother! I'm glad that there's someone else out there who hates reality T.V..I think that todays t.v. shows are so lame and todays celeberties are more about the scandals surrounding them than their acting, singing, etc.I remember a time when Hollywood hid stars divorces and drug habits. Now it's all the rage.Bring on the old shows.
p.s. by the way I just put up the obscure series of the week blog at my page.

  10. Now is it that today's stars are that bad or that we are that old? Well, of course we will blame it on today's celebrities. I don't watch tv anymore except for football. Just watch lots of DVDs.

  11. Well, Metal Mark, we didn't have 24hour "news" networks that spend an unbelievable amount of time on celeb gossip; plus we have channels like E! and a billion magazines focusing on the latest celeb junk.

And a lot of the current celebs are products of reality shows, which by their very nature require little to no talent. Look at Kim Kardasian, she's famous because of a sex tape.

When I flip by Fox News and see that the talking heads are spending a full hour talking about Lindsey Lohan's substance abuse problem, or Geraldo is speculating about Michael Jackson's "murder"... I think, who the hell is watching this?

    I resemble that remark!

Hell, I didn't even know that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had gotten married! I thought they were still living together.

  14. If not knowing who the current pack of "celebrities" are was a measurement of coolness, I would be Miles Davis.

  17. Puppetboy - I did check out your obscure series. Hell Town was freaking awesome. I wish they'd just go ahead and put every show ever made on DVD right now... you know it's going to happen eventually, so why wait? I'd snatch up Hell Town with Grady from Sanford & Son and the sexy nuns in a minute.

  18. Hee hee. I just turned 36 last week and I think I'm the only woman in Los Angeles with a crinoline and cat eye sunglasses! I thought I was the only one that thought today's stars are overpackaged, overexposed, crap. Nice to know I'm not the only one!!!
I think the last REAL TV show worth watching was probably "Sledge Hammer!" or "Police Squad!" Reality TV is for those who have no imagination or lives.
Has it disappointed the rest of you that "TV Land" has gone to hell?

  20. I also not in touch with current TV, except what I find out on Facebook. The only time I watch TV is either On Demand or Netflix streaming. Mostly online on Facebook, You Tube, or on my favorite blog sites. Like this one!
