Obscure Grooves #4: Disco Explosion

I'd love to sit here and slam the hell out of these songs - disco music is such an easy target; however, you can't knock it when you put it in perspective. Disco music wasn't meant to appeal to the Neil Young crowd. It wasn't meant to convey a political or moral statement. It was meant to be played at a dance club at 2 o'clock in the morning to an audience hopped up on cocaine looking to uninhibited recreational sex..... Neil Young can kiss it.

So, with having said that, here's a few obscure disco tracks from the 70s. Enjoy!

"D.I.S.C.O." by Ottawan

You just knew somebody had to make the word "disco" into a lame acronym - well, that somebody was the French disco duo Ottawan. They change what each letter stands for throughout the song - here's one variation:

Desirable, Irresistable, Super sexy, such a Cutie, OOOOOOO!

There's something cool about the combination of horror themes and disco music - they just don't seem to go together at all, and that's what makes it so interesting, I guess.  Here's "Haunted Disco" by Chromium:

  1. I was just thinking the other day about how great disco is. In two days I heard the Bee Gees, Le Freak by Chic, KC and the Sunshine Band, and then that KISS disco song. What a great day!

  2. As a drummer since 1974 who grew up playing Kiss, Van Halen, and Rush tunes, it was a part of our very being to hate disco and do everything we could to kill it. "I Was Made for Loving You" hurt us deeply. But these days, I listen to *everything* except rap - which really should be killed, along with all the scum associated with it - and can easily get into some random disco song just as much as I can Wolfmother, QotSA, or 101 Strings.

  3. here in the UK, that Ottawan song is anything but obscure - it was a massive hit and i would imagine anyone of a certain age (around 35-70) would remember it well.
    i think it was co-written by the dad of one of the Daft Punk guys

  4. Do you have any idea where I can find Haunted Disco? I tried iTunes and Amazon with no luck.

    the funny thing is, here everybody loves disco, but the owner of this blog.

    Retrospace = Fail.

    1. Ya know what's worse than posting anonymously and complaining about shit? People who use the word "fail" as a noun.

  6. anonymous Tell me, what are YOU doing to bring disco back? What are you doing to remind people, for better or for worse, of their collective disco heritage?..... besides bitching on my blog.

    And just so you know, in case you ever decide to do anything besides complain - it's okay to present both the good and the bad of things you love. Just gushing about how much you love something is kind of lame, really.

  7. Stac - you can download it from me here:

    happy to oblige - sorry it took so long to reply

  8. Is that John Lennon "lurking" in the back of the UFO album?!
