Mini Skirt Monday #58: A Mini Almanac

Take a minute to enjoy a series of quotes and other stuff relating to the magical miniskirt.  I've peppered the post with vintage mini eye-candy to keep the interest of those (including myself) who don't read anything without pictures. Enjoy!

"If miniskirts had come in when I was in High School, I 'd have worn the shortest one." - Sharon Tate

“A good discussion is like a miniskirt. Short enough to pertain intrest and long enough to cover the subject.”

"Statistics are like miniskirts, they reveal more than what they hide." - Navjot Singh Sidhu

"The last modern thing I liked was the miniskirt. With technology now, nobody understands it... and that's the simple fact of the situation."
-The Grifters (1990)

"It's very simple: if you wore miniskirts in the '60s, spare us in the '90s."
- Just Shoot Me (Episode: "In Your Dreams", 1997)

“The miniskirt enables young ladies to run faster, and because of it, they may have to.”

"Mary Quant invented the miniskirt, which really consists of showing more leg. It’s something we’ve always wanted; and she, probably through insensitivity, was able to push it through and was surprised at the response because she wasn’t sensitive enough to expect a response….These are not major achievements. The major achievements of a race are great architecture, great music, great literature. These are not coming out of England…"
- Anthony Burgess

"I've worn a much shorter mini in London. That's nothing."
Sharon Tate on Linda Evans' miniskirt at The Daisy

  1. Didn't miniskirts really start in the 1920s with the flappers?RetroHound.com

  2. Damn, those tennis miniskirts are soooooo short! :O Gasp...

  3. To be honest, Retrohound, you can't really pinpoint the beginning. I mean, short skirts are on the walls of ancient Etruscan and Egyptian buildings.

As far as recent history goes, short dresses were not popular at any point in Western society during the 18th or 19th century. The Roaring Twenties ushered in the short skirt, but it was shortlived.

There needs to be a book on this subject.
