Magazines #12: A Couple Monster Mags

What child of the 70s doesn't love horror magazines? Here's a few scanned magazines for you to download.  I don't ask for anything in return, except your undying appreciation and/or a large cash sum.

I jest. First up is Monster Land from 1986. It's fairly cheap with very little in full color, but some nice articles on Halloween, VHS releases and Stephen King.  There's also instructions on how to make your own cheezy Star Fleet uniform.  Of course, there's Brinke Stevens pictures throughout as an Elvira knockoff called Evila.

This 1974 issue of Monster Times is a fun little read. There's articles on old B-movies like Schlock and Horror at Party Beach, and a wonderful section on The World's Worst Comics. Perfect cubicle reading.

Note: I'm sure you already have a CBR reader; but just in case, you can download free ones here.

  1. Pff, those are only for Windoze. I would just change the extension and unrar/unzip them and use OS X's built-in Quick Look to read them, then I found ComicReaderPro for OS X, or there's Bookman for the iPad. Both free (although CRP annoys you with shareware nags after a while).

  3. CBR files aren't only for Windows. There are CBR readers for Mac, Linux, Windows, iPads, and more. Just do a Google search for whatever operating system you use and you'll find plenty of choices.

  4. Been reading for quite a while and wanted to say thanks for these scans. Love the retro and especially love the monsters. Keep up the good work.

  5. Seeing The Monster Times again really takes me back!

I've used three or four different .cbr readers for the Mac. My favorite is this one:

And here's a page listing several others:

  6. When you refer to SCHLOCK as an "old" B movie, keep in mind that, at the time, it was new!! It was old by the time I finally saw it which was just earlier this year.

  7. Not an "Elvira knockoff"--this was years before Elvira was on tv or anything. Adobe readers and winrar together can easily convert CBRs to sets of regular jpg images.
