Needlework A-Go Go #18: 1960s Cable Knits Pamphlet

Are you ready for some more models with frozen smiles steadfastly staring into the distance? I know I am.  This one's from the 1960s, so you know going in that there's going to be lots of white chicks in bright happy colors wearing lots of makeup, and some manly men with pipes and jaunty swaggers.  So, what're we waiting for?.... Let's dig in!

This is curious.  Why is this chick in the yellow sweater grabbing her own throat and looking behind her in a fright? Is she holding an umbrella or it something to ward off an attacker? Is this a yarn booklet or a Hitchcock movie?

The perfect mid sixties couple: she's got the Audrey Hepburn/Laura Petrie vibe in full effect, and he's workin' the Sinatra/Avalon angle.  This was a few years before the Vietnam War escalated and the Manson Family murders when everything suddenly went to shit.  Things were still sparkling with glee.

Ah, yes.  A fashion spread featuring menswear was not complete without at least one dude with a pipe.  He looks a tad too ethnic for this time period - too much Sal Mineo, not nearly enough Hugh Beaumont.

I'll cast my vote for this style to come back into vogue.  These chicks are beautiful - especially the middle one.      This is what Snooki looks like in the Bizarro Universe.

YES!! Now, we're talkin'.  We've got Robert Young in a sweater vest and Lee Van Cleef smoking a pipe. It simply doesn't get much better than this.

  1. I really need to get a pipe and some swagger.

And I agree, as I was looking through these I thought, "Wow, this is a really good look!"

  3. I could totally see this coming back. The colors and shapes look wearable. Sometimes I wish I didn't have a wool allergy.

  4. When this catalog came out I lived in Philadelphia PA where you could wear stuff like this. I live in Houston now and all I can think when I look at these sweaters is how hot they would be.

  6. Boy, I get absorbed in these articles and I can't get out - it's like I'm unraveling a big cable-knit sweater that someone keeps knitting, and knitting, a-ha-h-and knitting, a-ha-ha-h-and knitting!!!
