Twisted Impressions #10: Rockets

Sometimes, with these "twisted impressions", I wonder if it's just me that's seeing sexual imagery, and I'm just reading too much into it.  This is not one of those times.  The woman + rocket combo is a tried and true veteran of the phallic imagery hall of fame.

Why is this so? Why has the rocket so often been used as a symbol for the male sex organ? I think it;'s pretty plain: it simply looks like one.  Plus, the rocket represents power.  An uncanny resemblance to a dick, and an association with raw power - that's a 1-2 punch in the phallic imagery world.

The only thing that holds a candle to the rocket is the cannon.... and that will be covered in the next twisted impression post.

  1. I've also heard of skyscrapers as phallic images. You might try a post on that.

Some of these look very similar to witches riding a broom, which as I understand began because they "rode" them, but differently than in the pictures. That image actually did come from direct phallic substitution.

  2. To add to Retro Hound (although I've a suspicion somehwere in the archives this has been mentioned already) in 1933 the greatest phallic symbol of them all was the Empire State Building. King Kong, not having any genitalia, could only consummate his lust for Fay Wray by reaching the highest state of orgasm in New York. If you look at the building from that time (and of course from stills), it had a rounded top; the tip would come later.
The witches' brooms is something I'd never heard before; intriguing. As my Kong anecdote collaborates, our ancestors weren't living in a Disneyland of naiveté.

  3. The cutie in the first picture also points out I've found in my many years of working: Women who look like that never work where you do.

  4. As Freud would say, sometimes a rocket between a pretty girls legs is a symbol for a penis......
