Vintage Wheels #13: The Super Van

Even Mr. T's 1982 custom AMC shrinks with embarrassment when The Super Van rolls up.  This baby is a shaggin' wagon powered by the sun!

Unlike your typical '70s van, this isn't just your average bed on wheels. This baby has a TV, tape deck, and "lighting effects" (I wonder what 8-track is in that tape deck.... my money's on Foghat). I'd give anything for just five minutes in that Captain's Chair, wheel in one hand, CB in the other.  It would really make me sad if this fine specimen is rusting away in some scrapyard.

I'll bet it still smells like pot.

  1. Solar powered!?! Why aren't we all driving one of these?

  2. More likely, it had some disco tape in the deck and smelled like Hai Karate instead of fucking pot. After all, it was a George Barris creation. And it looks like it's getting some love.

  4. We all wanted either a piece of tire-smoking, chick-impressing Dee-troit Iron to lay rubber on Woodward with (I lived in Detroit), or something we could climb into, turn west, and drive away forever from the scary-crazy stuff of the seventies, like nuclear proliferation, environmental degradation and miniskirts. Well, okay, not miniskirts. There seemed, however, to be some engineering obstacles in the way of building one vehicle that would do all that. And I agree with Armpit, a Barris rod wouldn't smell of pot. Barris also did the Beach Boys' Little Deuce Coupe, the Beverly Hillbillies' 1921 Oldsmobile truck, the Munsters' Koach, The General Lee, and lots of other stuff the Hollywood establishment needed for wholesome, prime time... uh... high-jinks. Thanks to both of you, Gilligan and Armpit, for a great read, though!

  6. Wonderful. Take a look at http://www.barris.com/gallery_cars/TV_MovieCars/gallery_supervan.html for more of this vehicle - though in a different configuration.

Next best guess: 'Dream Weaver', by Gary Wright!
