Vintage Style #26: Terry Turn-Ons

This little number comes to us from 1978, but it may as well come from another planet it so foreign to our sense of taste.  What was it that prompted Boomers to don mustaches and slip into a skin tight polyester blend unitard? On the one hand, it's utterly masculine with its ability to expose every ripple and crease of the male anatomy.  On the other hand, I could easily imagine Kate Jackson wearing this on Charlie's Angels.

  1. I don't care how bad everyone else thinks this is, for the simple fact that unlike today's fashion trend of "sagging" - I find this look sexy. I'm sick and tired of seeing men's dirty boxer shorts. Give me skin tight unitards over sagging jeans any day!

Men, want to turn me on? Where pants that cover your underwear!

  2. I agree with JamiSings about how bad the baggy saggy look these days is, but I'm afraid I can't embrace the tight leisure suit look either. It sure does bring back some late 70's memories though.

  3. Well, what can I say? I have weird tastes anyway. Like I love men with big noses. Forget Christian and give me Cyrano!

But think about it - women love men in tuxedos, suits, and uniforms. Why? Because even a guy who looks like a cross between The Phantom Of The Opera and Quasimodo can look well put together in these things. They match, they're usually well fitting. So even a skin tight leisure suit can be sexy simply because it makes a man look like he knows how to dress properly.

    1. Well said. Give me a form fitting terrycloth tracksuit any day over that baggy look that won't seem to end. Say what you want about the clothing featured in this ad, but it was a very brief style that only lasted at most a couple years. However, this boring and lame baggy style seems to have lingered many years past its expiration date.

  4. The trendier it is today, the more ridiculous it will look tomorrow. And I don't mean "next year" or "a few months from now." I mean tomorrow.

  6. I too prefer the tighter 70s look in male fashions, rather than the horrid baggy, saggy, shapeless look of today. But count me out when it comes to terry cloth couture (except bathrobes). In fact, I don't like the "one piece" look in general. This thing is not a leisure suit, it's a jumpsuit. It never really caught on for men. A leisure suit was pants and a jacket.

  7. My dad had jumpsuits in the 70s. He often wore them on weekends. I thought they were great back then. They were not tight like these, and they were made of plain old cotton. But the one I specifically remember was a sort of avocadoish oliveish green color, but a bit brighter in hue than that. Can't think what to call the color.

  8. I want to make a joke along the lines of "What about the Terry-Thomas Turn-Ons?", but I'm not sure how well that reference would go over.

  9. Is it just me or does the woman look like she was in a fight facial wise.
