Ads #54: Hosiery

A while back I published an epic post on the downfall of women's hosiery.  And, yes, I said "epic" - the most overused and misapplied word in the English language.  But, in this case, I feel it is appropriate, even by the strictest Homeric definition possible.

Well, it so happens that I've just got about fifteen more hosiery ads I'd like to share.  I'll refrain from pleading to the gods for hosiery to come back in style, and just post the ads instead.  Enjoy.

  1. Well, there is hope for hosiery. Apparently whomever that Kate chick is that married that one English prince (see how much I pay attention? LOL) she refuses to wear a dress without nylons. And because of that they're coming back in style.

Nevermind that the dress she was modeling that caught the prince's eye was something so sheer and see through even a $2 hooker wouldn't wear it. But that's another story.

    1. She wears them because of royal etiquette or some such thing, not because she personally refuses. Princess Diana probably was never seen in a dress or skirt without hose either, at least while she was still married.

  3. Never gone out of fashion in the UK and various parts of Europe. And there's something about a girl eating a massive sundae wearing nothing but pantyhose isn't th....OMG THAT'S A GUY IN THAT LAST PHOTO!

    1. The sundae girl actually looks like Jane Fonda. But holy crap, I did'nt see the guy in the last picture before you pointed him out. Freaky...

    2. That guy isn't the only one. At the height of his popularity, Joe Namath appeared in a pantyhose commercial wearing them.

  4. Photo #3: Karen Black, as in "The stewardess is flying the plane!?!" Airport 1975.

  6. A wonderful post causing me to wax nostolgic, lust for pancakes and crave ice cream all at the same time. By the way, my own opinion as to what is the most overused and misapplied word in the english language is the word iconic a word now used over and over when the words popular, historical or familiar would be more appropriate.

  7. As someone who detests wearing the damn things I can only hope I never have to wear another pair. When I think of what they cost and how quickly they are damaged I cringe. One minor nail nuisance and before you've got them on they're snagged and running and tearing. Unpleasant for sure.

Now the question is how many people still have the Legg Eggs? Surely there are people who have found them and have no idea what these plastic eggs were ever used for. One of the odder more wasteful packaging designs.

  8. Five minutes of web research suggests that the Asian woman in the 2nd picture is a model named Helen Selby.

  9. I walked past the hosiery section of my local drug store last weekend. A few relics left for a woman has just arrived here in a time machine. I'm so glad not to be tortured by those awful things anymore.

  13. I can appreciate the inconvenience women go through wearing pantyhose, but I have there is something about a woman in a suit, hose and heels.

  14. I didn't know about your "epic" post before I posted the following on Facebook on August 30:

"Not that I'm staring lasciviously at women's legs or anything, but a random thought occured to me recently, perhaps from seeing an old magazine ad or something: how come y'alls don't wear stockings/pantyhose anymore? They kinda, y'know, hide a multitude of sins. Haha. :p"

  17. Pantyhose are the single sexiest article of clothing a woman can wear, period, the end. I'm grateful that Kate Middleton has revived pantyhose in the USA, but it puzzles me that Beyonce, Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, and Lady Gaga have NOT had an impact, despite their obvious love for pantyhose. I always wonder WHO that super influential person that tips the balance is. Fashionable women wore sandal foot pantyhose for decades, then suddenly "SOMEBODY" declared "No hose with open toes" and…IT STUCK! Why? It is NONSENSE !!!

    1. Have you worn pantyhose all day? Because until you have I don't think you'll ever understand why many women loathe them.
