Vintage Reads #43: Swedish Mystery/Espionage Paperbacks

I know what you're thinking.  You're thinking Retrospace is nice and all, but it just doesn't have enough Swedish paperback posts.  Well, worry no longer.  Quicker than you can say "ABBA" or "IKEA", I'm dishing up a smorgasbord of mystery/action/espionage covers to satisfy even the biggest Swedophiles among you. Njuta!

  1. I was really in the mood for a post on Swedish paperbacks and here it is! I'm so excited!

Some of these are really great, I assume the art work is the same as the American version?

My favs are Hon Dog Om Natten, Silkes Snoret with the gal with a gun and the guy looking totally whipped, and Livet Pa Spel. What those titles mean I have no idea, but here's my guess: the first one sounds like "Horn Dog on Natalie." The second one is "Silk Shorts" or "Silk Snorting." The third on is "Living under Pa's Spell."

    1. Hon dog om natten: She died at night, Silkessnöret: String of silk (also indicating that somebody is fired), Livet på spel: Life at stake. Did I ruin your fun now? I didn´t mean to, and I really liked your guesses, especially "Silk snorting".

  2. That really is some amazing artwork. It evokes so much more than anything ever done by hacks like Warhol or Pollock.

    1. "Högspänning" means high tension (voltage), but it's also a word play meaning "highly exciting".

  5. The last book is Turkish, but the rest are Swedish all right. One of those illustrators is an distinguished artist today, by the way, and he makes loads of money.

  6. Sadly, I can no longer look at too many paperbacks like those. They are so cheesy, they raise my cholesterol!
