Vintage Scares #37: Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery

Looking through a stack of Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery comic books, I was impressed by the cover artwork for each issue.  Definitely worth sharing.  Have a look....

  1. Did the contents live up to the cover art?

Also: Don't think I've ever seen so many horror / scifi images with so few babes in peril.

  2. Yes! There are no babes in peril. ?????? In fact, almost no females. I remember seeing these each month as I bought my Green Lantern comics, but seeing a bunch of them in a row adds to a really impressive gallery.

  3. Wonderful pallets and monster designs. I'm reminded of all the wild-ass Monsters Of The Day from the Hanna-Barbera toons of the 60s like Space Ghost, Galactic Trio, Herculoids and the like. And those teaser lines!
I see an homage to Godzilla, a very early suggestion for Pokémon, some very impressive portraiture to be honest. The Swamp Monster under the tail of the '57 Oldsmobile is the scariest of them for me.

  4. I believe this started out as a Dell adaptation of the Thriller TV show that Karloff hosted. Dell & Gold Key were really the same company. At any rate the comic lasted longer than the TV show. Looking at the covers, the stories were much more interesting.

  5. You can't find comic books like this anymore. No wonder the art is dying.

  6. Got all of these in CBR format. Good reads.
