Goodbye Miss Brahms

20 July 1943 - 26 February 2009

Not being British, I guess I'm not as familiar with Wendy Richard's work as many of those across the pond. However, I will say that I've been watching Are You Being Served? since I was too young to know Mr. Humphries was gay.

Thanks to PBS, I can't name many other shows that I've been able to continue to watch over the decades unabated. In fact AYBS? has been with me so long and is so steeped in nostalgia, that (not unlike The Brady Bunch) I really can't tell you if the show is any good or not - it just is what it is, and I like it.

Wendy has a great deal of films and television shows on her résumé which I don't know enough to comment on, so I'll leave that to other bloggers. Instead, I'll just leave you with a pic of Wendy on the set of Help! with some dude.

  1. If I recall correctly, she actually said she'd forgotten having been in HELP until those stills were discovered a few years back. Both she and British comedy legend Frankie Howard appear in them with Paul but all traces of them were cut from the film itself and no footage of the scenes has been found as yet.

  2. The Lasting Tribute website has updated its memorial pages to include Wendy Richard.

It's a respectful memorial to her and somewhere to pay tribute to her fortitude in fighting her illness.

EVERY comment is monitored so that nothing offensive or inappropriate is published.

  3. Booksteve- I knew her scenes had ended up on the cutting room floor, but I didn't know that even she'd forgotten she'd done it!

Patrick - A worthy cause indeed. The article and 16 images posted there are a wonderful tribute to a beautiful and talented actress. I think I'll add a comment there.

  4. I didn't know she had passed away. That's so sad. I loved watched AYBS?. My bro and I started watching it as kids here on PBS. I'll still watch it. I don't remember seeing her in much else except Eastenders. It's a shame to hear she has died. Do you know of what?

  5. Hi,
New here.:) Sad she passed away. She was a good actress!:)

  6. That is sad news. I'm a big fan of A.Y.B.S. and have seen every episode several times!

  7. I loved Are you bein served? I laughed myself silly since I discovered it on PBS when I was 12 years old. I am sad to hear theat Wendy is gone.

  8. Hi,

I have more pictures from Wendy in Help! as well as many others on her page.

I run an official "Are You Being Served?" site at:

There are a lot of images and info pertaining to all the cast members.

There is also a lot of other stuff for the AYBS fan including a blog, forum and an online role playing game.
