"The game is Broomsticks... but you can only play if you wear Broomsticks slacks." .... is "Broomsticks" code for "gang bang"?
"Get her in a good tight half nelson and shock her back to reality with a stern warning such as 'Watch it, sister!'"
Easy does it there partner. Your lady is just giving you an enthusiastic hug. A karate chop and a power half nelson may be a bit of an over-reaction. It looks like he's ready to snap her neck.

For some reason, this next ad reminds me of the KISS
Love Gun album cover. Maybe it's the throngs of lovely maidens draping themselves all over this guy, with one girl literally making love to his knee cap. Evidently, the marketing tool being used here is to associate Harris slacks with feeling like Conan the Destroyer sitting upon his mighty throne... "Wench, bring me my goblet!"

(These ads found here on Flickr- a brilliant collection of which I shamelessly swiped.)
Is it me, or is Axe just bottles of Hai Karate with a sticker over the label? It's funny how the ads are basically the same (just less fun without the whiff of, er, nostalia).
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the TV commercial for Hai Karate? They've been running it on RTN!
ReplyDeleteI bought a pair or two of Broomsticks back in 1969. Those and A1 Racers were the slacks to wear at the high school I attended. By the next year, all of us had given up wearing anything but jeans. I guess we came to our senses!
ReplyDeleteanonymous- It is not just you, and please comment here more often, that was very well put.
ReplyDeleteatom kid - I watch a lot of RTN (no surprises there). I get a bit irritated at the picture quality of the commercials they air - you can see the same ads on YouTube and they're crisp and clear. I'm just thankful RTN is around, so I guess I shouldn't whine.
don - Can't say I ever owned a pair. It was jeans for me all through childhood - the acid washed craze I could have lived without.
Hey Gil. Thanks for sharing these with us. There was something fun and more lighthearted about the ads of the past. Now ads like this would cause quite a firestorm.
ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of sexist ads today.
ReplyDeleteHowever, when my girl (or even my own wife) succeeds in knocking me down, and I know I've had it, or at least am going to get it, why on earth would I want to knock her back to her senses?
I wish I had a time machine, so I could go back and hear firsthand the agency pitch for that Broomsticks ad...
ReplyDeleteMy that girl in the top pic sure is popular..
ReplyDelete... sorry, I know that was lame, I just didn't really have anything to add on this one...
ReplyDeleteHai Karate has been the butt of jokes ever since it came on the scene. They also have the commercial on YouTube.Man I miss the 70s
ReplyDeleteFunny...hahaha...
ReplyDeleteThat last guy looks like he's secretly gay or something too--he is definitely NOT diggin' the women.
ReplyDeletechocking !!
ReplyDeleteThis is a funny doritos ad
