Hey, Isn't That...?

Who’s that guy in the advertisement? He sure looks familiar... hey, wait a minute - isn't that Tom Berenger? I'll be damn. It sure is.

There’s a certain pleasure in spotting actors in places you don't expect to see them. If you've never shouted something like "GOOD LORD, THAT'S MAX GAIL FROM BARNEY MILLER!!!" during a movie, then you don't know what you're missing.

Well, it is my deep and abiding commitment as a blogger to spread all aspects of my unhealthy obsession with everything retro. I will continue to share interesting and unexpected actor sightings in ads, TV and movies in upcoming posts. Here's a few from some recent TV watching...

I just watched an episode of Adam-12 and spotted a young Jodie Foster. Not all that unusual really - she was in a ton of things as a kid. I just thought I'd share.

Imagine my surprise when I spotted Mr. Drummond (Conrad Baine) in and episode of Dark Shadows. "Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, Barnabas?"

There was a lot of cross pollination on sitcoms during the 1970's. It wasn't unusual to see an actor from one sitcom guest appearing on another (always resulting in riotous applause from the studio audience). Spotting Loni Anderson at the Regal Beagle on Three's Company was pretty cool. I'm not sure if this was before or during WKRP. Regardless, I was lapping it up and begging for more.

  1. I know that feeling. I was watching an early episode of MASH and recognized a woman's voice. It took me a few minutes to realize it was a pre-Kotter Marcia Strassman. My wife is a lot better at spotting people like that though.

  2. That Tom Berenger photo sure likes like James Franco from the Spider Man movies.

Keep Watching Dark Shadows and you'll see a pre-Charlies Angels.

And Marsha Mason as a vampire girl.

    Above comment shouls read-

Should read Pre-Charlies Angel: Kate Jackson

  5. Saw an episode of Gunsmoke with Harrison Ford playing a bad guy.
Also - this one is probably obscure to most people but I was happy - that kid who played LSD user "Blueboy" in that classic episode of Dragnet ("My hair's green, I'm a tree!') was also in an episode of Gunsmoke.

This is an obsession with my wife and I. We love to "scoop" each other on who can ID these people first. Sometimes, we have to resort to researching the IMDB or TV.com. Then, you will hear an "AHA, I was right" coming from whoever is doing the computer look-up. Can anyone her settle an old dispute between me and my sister in-law? I say John Ritter played a character named "shampoo man" in a TV commercial. She says no way. But, I think he did start that commercial, and was replaced by someone else. This was all in the very early days of Three's Company.

  7. It is always neat to see ads, movies, tv shows, etc. that feature someone that you know from other things. Hope you had a good weekend.

  8. My wife and I do this all the time. Especially with character actors guest starring in TV shows. "Hey wasn't he in that one episode of A-Team?" "Hey, that's Stephanie Zimbalist!"

  9. One of my favorites is pre-Mr. Roper Norman Fell turning up at the end of The Graduate as, of course, a landlord.

  10. Loni Anderson was also in an episode of The Bob Newhart Show. She filed a paternity suit against Mr. Carlin, claiming he was the father of her young teen son.

Shelly Long also appeared in an episode of M*A*S*H as, of all things, a nurse. Even Ron Howard, before Happy Days, was an under aged soldier trying to get a medal on that show.

Both Tom Selleck and Farra Faucet were in Mira Breckenridge, with Raquel Welch when she was at the top of her career, and they were just starting.
