In the 1970's, I remember Martin Mull from his various TV roles - on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and Fernwood 2-Nite, as well as a number of guest appearances. In the 80's and 90's, he was on Rosanne and any number of TV commercials and a bunch of awful movies, the worst of which was the Brad Pitt slasher flick, Cutting Class.
Who knew that he was such a cool and talented dude? Look at him now, and he's just a fuddy duddy spokesman for Red Roof Inn, but in 1972 he kicked ass. Mull was a talented musician and comedian, and this album is a surprising gem. I can't really describe what type of music this is - maybe Randy Newman crossed with Frank Zappa? Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.

Don't forget Mr. Mom!
ReplyDeleteIf you like Martin Mull (even if you don't), please get the movie Serial which is a send-up of Marin County in the 70's. Hilarious!
ReplyDeleteThank God, you feel the same - Mull used to be cool, but now he just seems like a big fuddy duddy.
ReplyDeleteDon't know if you ever saw the film "FM", but that was a role perfectly suited to him.
Dig it.

The cartoon-like art on the album cover was painted by Mr. Mull hizzownsef. He once staged an art "exhibition" at the Guggenheim (IIRC) by sneaking some of his paintings into the men's room and hanging them on the wall, just so he could say his paintings had hung on the wall there!
ReplyDeleteI think he was awesome up until Roseanne. On that show he was funny, if a bit stuffy. And, like anyone, he has aged. But there is always hope. Right?
ReplyDeleteHe sounds a little like Kermit to me lol
ReplyDeleteTo the Editor:
ReplyDeleteMartin Mull was really funny in his brief arc on Arrested Development. But then again, EVERYONE (including Scott Baio and Bud Cort) were really funny on Arrested Development...
But that's just me.

Weird, but I recently just watched a Wonder Woman episode (season 2) where Mull stars as the Pied Piper. Playing fruity Jethro Tull-style flute, he has the magical ability to transfix his audience and his groupies, who would then steal the concert receipts backstage. Maybe the best part was that Jan from the Brady Bunch was his main muse. Awesome episode. And thanks for the Mull download...
