Rollermania #4: Roller Ads

Long before rollerblades took skating outside, there was a whole fashion niche in the roller skating world of the rink and roller disco.  There were bedazzled leotards and funky skates in a dazzlingly hideous variety. For instance, there was the roller formalwear...

Of course, most rollerwear was gaudy beyond human comprehension - especially attire designed for the roller disco. Not that the guys were complaining...

So, let's take a look at some of them in my little gallery of roller skating advertisements from the 1970s and early 80s. While none are jaw dropping risque like the image above, they're no less interesting for nostalgia's sake. Enjoy!

  1. The person responsible for that last Leo's photo needs a good slappin'. The tiny o-mouth look was never a good look, even in the '20s. Leo-Tard indeed.

That sure looks like Catherine Moriarty in the Polar Sport ad.

The guy in the third picture just might be Walter Egan of "Magnet & Steel" fame. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GYyEaQnT60

  4. Gilligan,
In that third picture down, WHAT is that sticking out between the girl's legs right where the skirt ends? I use the term 'girl' loosely here because from the waist up it's a girl but from the waist down, well, looks like one of 'the boys' got loose and made an appearance. (?). Enlarge the picture. I actually thought it was a Rocky Horror Ad for a split second... just sayin'. :)

  5. I don't know, Anna. I zoomed in... there's certainly something there, but I'm not sure its what you think it is. Plus, this might be Walter Egan - not likely he'd pose with trannies. However, I don't have an explanation as to what that "thing" is either. Curious indeed.

  6. That just looks like the crotch and shadow from her underwear/bodysuit to me.
