Ah, yes. Any of you out there remember when every city and town, no matter how big or small, had a thriving downtown? Today, we have the urban sprawl that began with malls and huge discount stores (i.e. Wal Mart) and has devolved into the outdoor shopping center/strip mall. Everything's a chain, none of the salespeople give two shits about you, and.... well, I'll save that rant for another post. Suffice it to say: Downtown mom and pop shops, may you rest in piece.
I happened to come by a few ads for wonderful downtown stores from the late 60s and early 70s, each featuring miniskirted models. I hope you enjoy them. And remember: "Be Fashionable. Shop Murray's House of Fashion."
I love it! The models are obviously average girls who are a bit embarrassed.

Boy does this bring back memories--I grew up in a small town with a ladies dress shop just like this, "The Carol Lee Shop". You didn't see any girls shopping there, only high school & up. I remember the first time my mom took my sister shopping at the Carol Lee Shop, like it was some type of 'coming of age' ritual.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that everytime I see these miniskirted girls from the early 70s, they all seem older to me? I guess it's because they remind me so much of being an 8 year old kid again! :)
Thanks for sharing that story apachedug. I have similar memories of downtown stores.... it's just not the same with these outdoor strip malls - kind of hard to feel any affection for The Banana Republic.
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody know where Murray's was located? I Googled the name and the only mention was here and on Flikr.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have a mall just a downtown. It's not a small town either.
