I've mentioned this many times before, but it bears repeating: Back in the day, every Holiday Inn, Best Western, and Howard Johnson's had a lounge. And in each lounge would be some low-key musician on stage. They became an easy target for ridicule in the eighties, but the lounge act during the sixties and seventies, was the f***ing bomb. These guys and gals took a page out of the Tony Orlando playbook and were there to entertain you while you sipped your Scotch. No high aspirations - just background music, perhaps, to your swingin' evening.
They say most lounges were converted to conference rooms for businesses. Maybe that was more lucrative for the hotel chains, but I say there will always be something lacking.
Have a look at some good old fashioned press photos of musicians who weren't exactly household names, but are forever preserved here on Retrospace.
Note: The black lines on some of these photos are where they were going to be cropped for promotional purposes (concert ads, etc.).

I guess Sandy Mason is the one in the throne? |

I'm not sure who this is, but I dig the outfit |
Some days i'm so glad i never started a band back in the 70's.
ReplyDeleteLate 60s to early 70s had to be one of the fastest fashion change periods in history....
ReplyDeleteI was sent home several times in the mid-late 60s for having long hair (defined as hair that touched the top of the ear!). By the early 70s, everyone had "long" hair!
What was rebel and counter-culture in the late 60s was status quo a few years later....
It looks like just about anyone could start up a band in the 60's and 70's....haha!
ReplyDeleteI think The Wu Tang Clan is a rap group, idk.
ReplyDeleteI think the guys n Jubilee grew their hair longer and started calling themselves Morbid Angel.
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck is a Colow?
ReplyDeleteI'm disappointed there weren't any 4-piece groups called trios or 6-man outfits called quintets.
ReplyDeleteThe "Wu Tang" boys have to be early ZZ-Top, way early. These are all gold, crop marks and all. The Gutzi image reminds me of the movie "Almost Famous" - "Hey, what do I know? I'm just one of the out-of-focus guys!" (Gutzi move!)
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I think I have an old band promo photo from the 80s. Lots of big hair and spandex...now I gotta find it!
ReplyDeleteWhat passed as a "professional" photo then wouldn't make a loser's flicker page now. Unkempt hair, slouching, etc.
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of kids out there going, "DAD! SERIOUSLY???"
ReplyDeleteAnd there are a lot of dads out there who have a slug of Scotch at the end of the day and think, "What if?"
Almost Mini skirt Monday worthy!
ReplyDeleteThe Von Hiatt Trio played for the Hilton Hotels not the Holiday Inn hotels. Just FYI
