Bad Songs #16

"A Little Chunk of You" by David Wilcox (1977)
By '77 folk music had long overstayed its welcome. "You made me love you, when I didn't love myself" - Blecch.

"Julie Argoyne" by Mick Softley (1970)
At what point did Anglo Prog just stop trying? Here's your answer.  He sounds like a crazed leprechaun.

"Maggie, the Baby Is Crying" by Vernon Oxford (1978)
Country music "woe is me" at its worst.  Someone should tell Vernon his kid is crying because of his lousy singing.

"A Blanket of Sound" by Banned (1968)
Someone should put a blanket over this sound.... or better yet, the singer's mouth.  If there was ever a person worthy of smothering, it's this singer.

"Flashy Lady" by Barry Manilow (1973)
I admit openly that I like me some Manilow on occasion.... just not this occasion.  I don't know if he's trying to be Paul Stanley or something, but it's not workin'.

"Night Girl" by Tear Gas (1970)
I include this one for fans of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia who will recall the tragic "Night Man" song.  Sadly, this song bears a lot similarities...... but much, much worse.

"Bobo's Party" by Melanie (1968)
This song actually reached number one in France - which highly disturbing because this song is simply torturous. It may have great lyrics, but the sound is so shrill and miserable, you'll be too busy praying for it to end to register a single word.   It's nearly as bad as Nickelback.... yeah, I said it.

"Trying to Write a Hit Song" by Player
This song isn't too terribly bad, but I thought it was a fitting end to this post.

Well, you made it through. Congratulation.  I just hope there hasn't been any permanent psychological damage.

I actually like Bobo's Party in a way. The guitar work in it is quite appealing, And the singing isn't /so/ bad.

  2. Hey! I like Flashy Lady! Even if it does sound like a pole dancer/stripper song. In fact, the only Manilow song I don't care for is Bobbi Lee and that's because it's about a teenage hooker and it makes her life seem glamorous rather than the Hellhole you know it is. However, the previously unreleased No Love For Jenny they put on the remastered Even Now album makes up for it. That one is about a teenage stripper/hooker who has the shitty life you know Bobbi had.

  3. The song that says it is "Blanket of Sound" by Banned sounds like a Henry Gibson song he did about a bluebird. Maybe the wrong track or something.

  4. It is the wrong track. That's Gibson from his GRASS MENAGERIE album singling BLUEBIRD--probably better than the rest of these songs but definitely not The Banned with BLANKET OF SOUND.

    1. Shit. I'm in New Orleans with very limited internet access. I promise to fix it when I get back. Sorry.

  5. The middle instrumental part of "Night Girl" is really good...it's just bookended by horrible vocals. However, what list of torturous listening experiences is complete without The Legendary Stardust Cowboy singing "Paralysed"?

I like Flashy Lady, too! I got the One Voice album (on cassette!) for Christmas when I was in sixth grade. Both Bobbi Lee and Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed sounded really dirty to my Catholic school girl mind.

    1. Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed IS dirty! It's all about a guy who's figured out his wife is sleeping around. And you should see Barry perform it live. He'll start doing this really hot bump and grind during it....
