So, my wife just asked me why I'm posting a bunch of sleeves from Dutch singles.... and, honestly, I couldn't formulate an answer.
Quite honestly, I could think all day long and still not be able to put into words why I'm posting these. It's not because there's no reason - it's that the reason is too esoteric for the uninitiated to fathom. Vinyl art is a goddamn transcendental experience for those that "get it". It's beyond kitsch, it's beyond nostalgia, it's beyond humor.... the only way I can put it into words is it's an existential walk with Jesus.
Enjoy.
I downloaded "Santa Lucia By Night" by George Baker Selection from Itunes. I produce a show called Remember When and the host began playing it a few years back after he found it on an imported 80s CD.
ReplyDeleteThe Star Sisters is an off-shoot of Stars on 45 with Yvonne Keeley (the one on the left). Keely had a duet with a guy named Scott Fitzgerald called "If I Had Words." The Star Sister had a "Swing Medley" the video, where they are dressed as the Andrew Sisters singing at a USO club, was incorporated into a documentary on comics made for Spanish TV.
Yes, I'm full of this useless knowledge.
Useless everywhere but here, my friend. Fascinating.
DeleteI well remember the Stars on 45 - in fact I had two of their records. The Beatles medly was pretty cool.
"The Stars on 45 keep on turnin' in your mind. Like We Can Work It Out and remember Twist and Shout..... You Still don't Tell Me Why and No Reply-y-y!"
Some of these are seriously disturbing. So much so that I don't even WANT to use Google Translate to find out what they mean!
ReplyDeleteMarc Benz, former produce manager at the Camden NJ A&P, quit his job, moved to Holland, released a single and died in obscurity.
ReplyDeleteah, if I only had a nickel for every time I've heard that story.
DeleteThat is some strange stuff!
ReplyDeleteThe guy (I THINK it's a guy) second from the right on the Vulcano single resembles the famed "Joyce".
ReplyDeleteCock van der Palm?
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize George Baker Selection was Dutch. "Little Green Bag" is awesome! I have their LP "Paloma Blanca", but I haven't listened to it yet.
ReplyDeleteThat Love and Kisses cover looks very Scorpions-eque, huh? :p
Golden classics, each & every one. Makes one proud to be Dutch!
ReplyDelete"Snurk-Rap"!
ReplyDeleteNicole (the chick with the enormous white guitar) is actually German; I didn't know she released a Dutch translation of her Grand Prix song. Traitorrrrr...
ReplyDeleteGilligan, you may need medication.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I hate it when my wife asks me why I am posting this, or photographing that, or buying some crazy thing, because I have no real answer that will satisfy her or any normal human being. I feel slightly foolish, but I can't stop. Maybe I need medication too. Retrophilia or something as yet undefined by the psychological establishment.
No Earth & Fire picture sleeves? Jerney Kaagman was quite the stroopwafel in her day.
ReplyDelete'one more little kissy'.. shun of a vich that's hot!
ReplyDelete"DUO FANCY" ...isn't. So, "Beloof Me!"
ReplyDeleteWonderful. I'm proud to say I have many of these songs on my ipod.
ReplyDeleteThese are hilarous! Not sure what is more disturbing....the giant sized glasses on the guy in Vulcano or the big banana chicks trying to look sexy with their blue mumu's and giant hair.
ReplyDeletefan-tastic
ReplyDeleteI remember a lot from when i was a teen. Not sure how i survived this "music".
