Vinyl Dynamite #52: A Couple Soundtracks
Today, for your listening pleasure, are a selection of tracks from the films After the Fox (1966) and O Lucky Man! (1973). Both were bargain bin finds that peaked my curiosity...
After the Fox (1966)
I haven't seen the After the Fox (1966), but I can pretty much predict what it'll be like, so I'm not in any rush. However, running across the soundtrack recently, I was a little intrigued to hear Peter Sellers sing alongside The Hollies, to a Burt Bacharach- Hal David number.
Turns out it's pretty awful. I know Sellers made several attempts at recordings; unfortunately, his talents were best conveyed on screen, if you get my drift.

O Lucky Man! (1973)
O Lucky Man! is another film I haven't seen, but actually have been meaning to see it. I've heard good things. Its soundtrack is composed by former Animals keyboardist, Alan Price, and was pretty well received critically.
I'd describe Price's work here as a Harry Nilsson - Randy Newman - early solo McCartney combo. Truthfully, not as good as any of the above listed names, but a worthy imitation. For me, there are a few "meh" duds on here, but overall, a solid LP - well worth the two bucks I paid for this bargain bin find.

It's Alex, before he met the Droogs!
ReplyDeleteThe Montrose version of O Lucky Man kicks major 1975 ass! On vinyl of course... https://youtu.be/dQ6pohV01Pw
ReplyDeleteJust listened to it. You weren't lying. Badass.
Delete"O Lucky Man!" is a great song! My second favorite is "Poor People," which will grow on you the more you listen to it. I wish I could recommend the film--it was an ambitious and experimental one that failed in the end. Alan Price performs the songs in the movie and is part of the story. "O Lucky Man!" is the second film in a loose trilogy bookended by "If ..." and "Britannia Hospital," all directed by Lindsay Anderson and starring Malcolm McDowell as Mick Travis.
ReplyDeleteI own the "O Lucky Man" LP. I may have bought it because I saw the movie when it was released. I don't remember a thing about it. I'd completely forgotten about it but the song is great.

ReplyDeleteI recommend After The Fox. Great performance from Sellers, comic turn from Victor Mature, great cast of character actors, a bit Felliniesque
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, I just listened to one of my favorite podcasts - Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast where he and his co-host not only talk about this film, but Gilbert attempts to sing the title song.
DeleteIt's weird. Haven't even thought about this film in my 45 years, and then within days I find and post the record, and immediately hear a podcast about it.
Anyway, Gilbert Gottfried has me convinced that it's a film I need to see. Not the typical dumb 60s farce I thought it was.
You should check out "After the Fox." My wife and I think it's a super hoot. Very funny stuff. Victor Mature is absolutely perfect as a washed up, but terminally narcissistic movie star. Peter Sellers is at the top of his game IMHO.
