I have to say - this may be the most amazing catalog I own. The brilliant colors, the elegant feminine fashions, the classy fashions for gentlemen, the luxurious decor... words can't convey the awesomeness of it. So, let's open it up, and begin our trek through the 1961 Spiegel Fall & Winter Catalog. My intention is to scan most of this entire catalog, starting from the beginning...
More to come....
I identify Spiegel as being the retailer that was always mentioned at the end of game shows. One of the participation prizes as I vaguely recall. I don't think I ever looked at an actual Spiegel catalogue, seems a bit upscale for the people I associated with - meaning my parents.
ReplyDeleteIf you get the Buzzr classic game show channel, watch the nightly airings of LET'S MAKE A DEAL,,,Spiegel supplied them items like color TVs and stereos.
Delete(that was still a big deal, if not necessarily the Big Deal--it wasn't until 1972 that color sets outsold black and white ones--and my research makes me believe there wasn't one yet in even a simple majority of American homes)
Such classy styles. Look at the pregnant chicks here - no stretch pants and tight shirts with gross protruding belly buttons like today.
ReplyDeleteAt the same time, there were 60's styles that made any woman wearing them look pregnant...
DeletePaul, I used to have several VHS tapes of the TV show Dark Shadows. When my nephew was little, he would watch them with me. He once asked why all the women wore "pregnant dresses."
Delete1961. The time of pillbox hats and bouffant hairdos. And the year before I was born.
ReplyDeleteThink Spiegel had any in leopard skin?
DeleteBright colours and yet restrained and stylish.
ReplyDeleteThis world was my early childhod (born 1956). You had to be there! ;)
ReplyDeleteSuch poise from the models.
ReplyDeleteT-stands. T-stands everywhere.

ReplyDeleteLOL
"More than 50,000 quality items"
DeleteAnd then there was Broyhill Furniture another great manufacturer highly associated with giving away product to gameshow contestants. Early in our marriage my wife and I went furniture shopping and for some reason we mentioned Broyhill. The salesman responded by saying, " Broyhill is crap everyone just knows it from the game shows."

Yes, the epitome of femininity, elegance, and class. As much as I love the miniskirt tastefully applied, these fashions are simply gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteGood Lord, these gals are SO classy by today's standards it hurts! What red-blooded man wouldn't prefer one of these fine lovelies over the pierced and tattooed Beluga whales that pass for modern wymen today?!?

ReplyDelete"pierced and tattooed Beluga whales" LOL And now Sport Illustrated is putting fatsos on the cover of their swimsuit issue. The world has lost all class and taste.
