Here's a stack of images of women at computers from 1979 to 1991 (we should have Kenny Rogers' "Through the Years" playing in the background). As you might have guessed, most are secretaries doing glamorless data entry for the gentlemen in double breasted suits (we weren't "enlightened" back then).
Still, gender issues aside, it's a fun stroll "through the years" in the Golden Age of Floppy Disks. Enjoy.

I can hear the specific sounds of those keyboards in action, depending on the era they come from. Damn I've been in IT for too long...
ReplyDeleteAnd I want to remind everyone that those big fill-your-desk units were still officially called "microcomputers".
From one of 1981 ads - a "super-simple" word processor "for less than $5,000"
ReplyDeleteYikes! I sometimes forget how expensive this stuff was back in those days.
My first "computer" was $1600, which was a great bargain as it had a built in screen and TWO 3.5" floppy drives. The Hard drive was an additional $1500. I got a stand alone hard drive later that could hold 20 mb of data and worked through my printer port. 7 mhz 8088 processor. Got me through college.
DeleteThat's a whole mess of TRS-80s. They were so cool looking with their silver and black cases, especially the Model III.

ReplyDeleteI am so keen to see this but having trouble loading any photos after the jump - just endlessly loading. Is there a problem with the links? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteJust tried it on my PC and my phone and it works. So I don't think there's a problem other than maybe this is a TON of pictures, and a poor wifi connection might cause issues. Anyone else out there having issues?
DeleteWorked fine the other day when I looked at them. Tonight they're a little slow, but all are working.
