Vinyl Dynamite #67: Nocturna - Granddaughter of Dracula (1979)

Imagine my joy when I came across this gem in a flea market dollar bin - it's the freakin' soundtrack to Nocturna: Granddaughter of Dracula!

A mighty combination of disco and horror, the film is like Xanadu crossed with Vampire Hookers.  Count Dracula (John Carradine) owes the taxman, so he lets his daughter, Nocturna (Nai Bonet), turn his castle into Disco Transylvania to make up the money. The story centers on a love affair brewing between Nocturna and a strapping young mortal boy - what will her daddy say? Also appearing: Brother Theodore and Yvonne DeCarlo as the vampire Jugulia!  As I recall, Nai Bonet does not get naked in the film, but she did bare all for a promotion in Gallery magazine.

It would've probably gone on to become a camp classic were it not for the soundtrack's royalty issues, preventing it from getting proper releases.  Nai Bonet both wrote the film and starred as the titular vampire.  Nai appeared in such classics as Devil's Angels (1967) and The Soul of Nigger Charley (1973), and began her career as a belly dancer.

Sadly, Nocturna was a flop.. as was her second venture Hoodlums (1980) - Nai gave up at this point - it was probably for the best.  It sort of reminds me of Harry Nilsson's venture into a similar domain - Son of Dracula (1974), another flop, but with a much better soundtrack.

Indeed, I wish I could say this was an undiscovered disco goldmine.  Unfortunately, it's forgettable fare: nondescript disco with precious little that stands out.  Although it's a double album, I've only recorded the first record (trust me - you're not missing anything).  Still, it's an obscure, bizarre little find, and am glad to share some of it with you.  Enjoy.
