Hot Rod magazine is one of the oldest car magazines that is still reigning supreme today. The Hot Rod lifestyle is a deep rooted part of American car culture and it's honestly one of the most thrilling ones to be a part of.
We did some exploring and grabbed a couple of covers from the 1960's Hot Rod era and boy are there some thunderous rides on the covers. It's all about the big powerful engines that ruled the streets. You can check out some of the covers we found from the 1960's in the images below.
In present day, Hot Rod is now part of a wider range of online publications that includes, Motor Trend, Automobile, Mustang 360 and a few more. The automobile game is only continuing to grow but it's always nice to see some of the earlier pieces like the beautiful covers below.
One of the first things I ever collected when I was a kid in the mid 70s and early 80s were Hot Rod, Car Craft, and other suchlike magazines. I read somewhere a few years ago that whoever owns the magazine now trashed stacks of photos and negs from the old days. Apparently people dug in the dumpsters and rescued what they could.
ReplyDeleteAll the negatives are at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Hot Rod Deluxe had a big article about the new archive area.
ReplyDeleteAha - Was it just photos then? I don't know where I read that. Hot Rod Deluxe maybe.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it might have been the prints, but they say they have the negatives going waaay back.
ReplyDeleteI loved when funny cars still looked like actual cars, like the fiberglas Comet on the first cover up there. Now they're just blobs.
ReplyDeleteI've been a car guy all my life and I collect these also. I got about 150 "little pages" hot rod type magazines that are about half the size of the normal magazine. Very few are Hot Rod, those tend to be pricey.
ReplyDeleteWho are you and what have you done with Gilligan?
ReplyDeleteIndeed, "Anonymous", we want the proper Retrospace back. This is too tame for words.
ReplyDeleteI would say the last three posts have been auto-generated in advance of their publication. The last post that is properly formatted on this site goes all the way back to July 4. Sadly Gilligan has been missing since that time.
ReplyDeleteGilligan also posts articles at Flashbak as Yeoman Lowbrow. In his absence from here I have noticed only one posting from him over there. Hopefully he is doing well.
ReplyDeleteAnyone else also noticing the VERY aggressive pop up ads? (Congratulations/spin prize wheel) His absence explains it some! :/
ReplyDeleteI use AdBlock Plus and have no problems with ads of any kind.
DeleteThis is so sad.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunate what's happened to one of my favorite websites. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the latest posts lack the “Gilligan touch”. Retrospace is the only non work related site I have in my bookmarks. I hope all is well with Gilligan and he comes back soon. I greatly appreciate the effort he has put in over the years to provide such a highly entertaining site.
ReplyDeleteI really hope Gilligan is ok. This is starting to worry me quite a bit. Always looked forward to visiting Retrospace!
ReplyDeleteIs this it? Is this how it ends, not with a bang but with a whimper?
ReplyDeleteRIP Gilligan
This really is weird... three posts obviously not by Gilligan, and then nothing.
ReplyDeleteThey always say "No news is good news", but, in this instance, I'm not so sure.
ReplyDeleteI emailed Gilligan and heard back from him today. He has sold the site. He just wasn't getting enough enjoyment or income from it after 8 years, and it cost quite a bit to keep up the quality and quantity like he did. He wanted to post a final goodbye, but it didn't work out with the new owners. He's still doing the Horshack Redemption podcast on Soundcloud.
ReplyDeleteIMO, Retrospace is now dead. The new owner sure as fuck doesn't care about quality, just making money by adding tons of annoying ad bullshit. Fuck them in the eye. Can't even write a longish comment without it auto-refreshing and losing everything. After doing that twice, I moved to writing this in a text editor. Fucking retards.
It was enormous fun while it lasted. I'll miss the hell out of Gilligan and his posts.
ROYAL BUMMER!!
ReplyDeleteGuess it's time to remove this site from my blogroll.
So long, Gilligan, and thanks for all the fish!
Man that stinks! Gilligan, if you ever read this, thanks so much for all of the enjoyment you brought to my boring workaday life! Best of luck in your new endeavors!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gilligan.good luck.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteWhew! Glad he's OK, even if the blog is in the crapper.
ReplyDeleteSorry to see Gilligan go - but thanks for past postings. Good luck!
DeleteIt was fun while it lasted. Perhaps if we all stop visiting here the new owner will lose his advertisers (?)
ReplyDeleteIf they keep it up like they've been doing then no traffic is pretty much a given. Shame to see it end like this.
DeleteGilligan is back active on Flashbak.com under the name Yeoman Lowbrow.
ReplyDeleteThat seems familiar. Did I know about that and simply lost track of it? Who knows! Thanks for reminding me.
DeleteNo more Mini Skirt Monday? Nooooooo!
ReplyDeleteDamn. This site was perfect. I guess it couldn't go on forever. Thank you for all the fun Gilligan.
ReplyDeleteI will certainly miss the REAL site. And I was one of the people to happily donate to Gilligan's site when he was running it. This new person won't get a penny from me! Good luck to you Gilligan. I'll be looking at Flashbak.
ReplyDeleteSeems to me that the anger here is misguided. Gilligan left his readers high and dry without a word of warning or saying goodbye to his readers...but yet you're all pissed off at the new blog owner(s)???
ReplyDeleteAs I said, he wanted to say goodbye, but it didn't work out. Yes, anger toward the new owners is completely correct.
DeleteSorry, but in my opinion there's no reason he couldn't have posted an update before actually making the domain sale transaction. He sold out and didn't care about updating you guys.
DeleteI don't blame Gilligan in any way - at all. Now, let's all just leave this site once and for all.....
